MicroPort® Orthopedics Holds First University of Hong Kong - Shenzhen Hospital Total Knee Arthroplasty Technique (TKA) Advancement Course

Shenzhen, China –The first Total Knee Arthroplasty Technique Advancement Course, which was co-organized by MicroPort® Orthopedics and University of Hong Kong - Shenzhen Hospital, took place on August 29. A total of 12 orthopedic surgeons from the Chinese provinces of Jiangsu, Sichuan, Shandong, Liaoning and Chongqing took part in the 2-day course on Medial-Pivot Knee TKA technique at University of Hong Kong - Shenzhen Hospital.
The University of Hong Kong Shenzhen hospital is a major comprehensive public hospital built by the Shenzhen municipal government with introduction of modern management model by the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Chun-Hoi Yan, who is clinical professor with Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the University of Hong Kong and Chief of Division of Joint Replacement Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital, is appointed as consultant of the Division of Joint Replacement Surgery at the Shenzhen hospital. Professor Yan and his team own ripe experience in the teaching of total knee arthroplasty technique. The training closely touched on the total knee arthroplasty technique, Medial-Pivot knee's design rationale, and clinical application and advantages, with a focus on transformation from theory to practice. With appropriate course planning and small group learning, the attending surgeons gained a more in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of MicroPort® Orthopedics' Medial-Pivot knee product, instruments and surgical technique within only two days.
Professor Yan started the training with "Kinematics of Normal Knee and Knee Implants". With the comparison and analysis of the kinematics of normal knee and knee implants, he explained to the surgeons in a progressive manner how MicroPort® Orthopedics' Medial-Pivot knee imitates the kinematics of normal knees through its unique highly-bionic and autonomical design rationale, which results in the restoration of normal knee function and a more natural feeling for the patients. Afterwards, Profess Yan held a seminar on total knee arthroplasty to introduce surgical experience and skills, and also prompted the surgeons to look into the total knee arthroplasty.
In the following session of surgery demonstration, Professor Yan demonstrated four surgeries using EVOLUTION® Medial-Pivot Knee System and had detailed and clear explanation about the surgery steps, instrument use and precautions. The 12 surgeons closely observed the clinical application and surgical skills of Medial-Pivot knee. As one of the world's top knee systems, EVOLUTION® owns widespread market influence and is very well-known. Also, the patients who had undergone the surgeries using EVOLUTION® commented that the knee system demonstrated outstanding stability and comfort level. In the end, Qi Zhu and Nan Lou, two doctors from University of Hong Kong - Shenzhen Hospital, spoke about the researches and experience of the hospital staff regarding the complications after knee replacements and the recovery after the surgery.
The two-day course deepened the surgeons' understanding of the rationale and product advantages of Medial-Pivot knee, with the related questions about Medial-Pivot knee and total knee arthroplasty being asked and answered thoroughly immediately. The surgeons gave positive feedbacks and comments, saying that they had further mastered the skills of Medial-Pivot knee replacement during the course, which would lay a good groundwork of theory and practice for the future performance of such surgery.
Thus far, the Total Knee Arthroplasty Technique Advancement Course co-organized by MicroPort® Orthopedics and Queen Mary Hospital has been successfully held for six times, with more and more orthopedic surgeons benefitting from the course. In future, MicroPort® Orthopedics will continually promote the scientific exchanges and help even more orthopedic surgeons understand and employ Medial-Pivot knee products in various forms including the Total Knee Arthroplasty Technique Advancement Course, so as to benefit the patients.
