ORLANDO, FL, October 28, 2026 — MicroPort® MedBot™ today announced that its Toumai® surgical robotic system, which is investigational in the United States, was used on October 25 in a robotic radical prostatectomy connecting two hospitals in Florida, approximately 35 miles apart. This was the first robotic telesurgery performed in the United States, according to the Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS).1
The procedure was conducted as part of a clinical study under an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The IDE authorizes the clinical investigation.*
Dr. Vipul Patel, founder and medical director of the Global Robotics Institute at AdventHealth Celebration and principal investigator of the study, operated the investigational Toumai® system remotely from AdventHealth Celebration. Co-principal investigator Dr. Marcio Moschovas and the bedside surgical team supported the patient at AdventHealth Minneola, with the ability to intervene if needed.
The procedure was completed in 103 minutes. The study team observed no interruptions in robotic control and reported clear two-way audio communication throughout. Study data remain under evaluation.
This Florida procedure is part of the same FDA-approved IDE study that previously included 10 investigational telesurgery procedures between Orlando and Luanda, Angola, beginning in June 2025. The study has now extended to procedures between two U.S. hospitals.
“For generations, access to highly specialized care has often depended on where a patient lives,” Dr. Patel said in a statement published by AdventHealth. “This study allows us to evaluate whether telesurgery could one day help reduce geographic barriers to specialized treatment. Important questions about safety, effectiveness and technical performance remain under investigation.”2
MicroPort® MedBot™’s approach to innovation begins with the needs of patients and the healthcare professionals who care for them. Its telesurgery research program explores whether technology could one day bring surgical expertise closer to patients.
