Melle & Aalst, Belgium, 04 June, 2025 — MicroPort® MedBot™ announced the successful completion of the first-ever intra-European telesurgeries using its CE-certified Toumai® Surgical Robot, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of remote robotic-assisted surgery in Europe.
On 26 May, as part of an ongoing clinical study, two landmark telesurgeries were conducted between Orsi Academy in Melle, Belgium, and AZORG Hospital in Aalst.
The first procedure was a radical prostatectomy, with Dr. Geert De Naeyer operating remotely and Prof. Alex Mottrie assisting on-site. The second was a hysterectomy performed by Dr. Emily Jamaer, marking the first telesurgery by a female surgeon in Europe, assisted by Dr. Koen Traen.
Both procedures were carried out using the hospital's standard network (V-LAN) for data transmission. With a bidirectional latency of only 20 milliseconds, the Toumai® system achieved the millisecond-level responsiveness required for remote surgical precision.
Throughout the surgeries, the Toumai® system demonstrated:
Dr. Alex He, President of MicroPort® MedBot™, commented: "Congratulations to the surgical teams, support staff, and all involved in this landmark achievement. Remote surgery is profoundly transforming the global healthcare landscape and laying the foundation for multinational medical collaboration. We look forward to Toumai® expanding its reach to benefit patients across more countries worldwide."
