Shanghai, China, 09 May 2025 — On April 22, MicroPort® MedBot™ achieved a significant milestone in the field of telesurgery with its Toumai® Surgical Robot, which recently enabled five complex telesurgeries to be performed simultaneously across five hospitals in China.
These landmark procedures were remotely conducted by surgical experts at the Remote Surgery Intelligence Center of Ruijin Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Meanwhile, the patients were located in five different locations across the country: Fujian, Yunnan, Jiangxi, Hainan, and another district in Shanghai.
The procedures covered a wide range of specialties, including pancreatic, hepatic, urological, gastrointestinal, and biliary surgeries. Many were complex cases that, under conventional conditions, would have required patient transfer to tertiary medical centers, often resulting in treatment delays.
One of the cases took place in Shangri-la People's Hospital of Diqing Prefecture, located nearly 3,000 kilometers from Shanghai, where a patient with a rectal tumor successfully underwent surgery performed remotely by Ruijin’s team. In Fujian, two patients—one with suspected liver cancer and another with kidney cancer—received precision robotic surgeries.
Additional procedures included a gallbladder removal in Jiangxi, a pancreatic cyst removal in Hainan, and a gastric cancer resection in Jiading district, Shanghai.
These surgeries were made possible by ultra-high-definition imaging and near-zero latency communications, enabled by advanced 5G networks infrastructure. The system allowed surgeons to perform with real-time control, precision, and stability across long distances.
“This achievement is not merely a technical milestone,” said Professor Ning Guang, President of Ruijin Hospital and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. “It represents a new era in surgical practice. Surgeons are no longer bound by physical distance. The operating room of the future could be virtually anywhere.”
Dr. Chang Zhaohua, Chairman and CEO of MicroPort®, highlighted the collaborative achievement: “Together with Ruijin Hospital, we overcame significant technical challenges to perform complex remote surgeries over 5G networks. Each success is a testament to the skill, dedication and expertise of both teams. Beyond showcasing the precision and stability of the Toumai® robotic surgical systems, these efforts also lay a strong foundation for the broader application of remote surgery in the future”.
